Gantt with dependencies

Project timeline, milestones and dependencies

One chronological axis for the project: the start and end of every sprint, the milestones you add, and the task due dates, in the order they come.

"Gantt" here means a timeline, not a bar chart with a critical path. 4myprojects gathers everything in the project that carries a date onto one axis: the start and end of every sprint, the milestones you add and the task due dates, sorted chronologically and marked by type. Separately, on each task you declare the tasks that block it — a Finish-to-Start dependency, read from the blocked task. Worth knowing from the start: dependencies are precedence relations you read, not rules that rewrite dates. A delay does not propagate on its own, and float, the critical path and a baseline are not computed.

  • One chronological axis per project: sprint start and end, milestones and task due dates, sorted by date.
  • Milestones with a name, a date and a description, added and removed straight from the timeline page.
  • Every item on the axis shows its type — sprint, milestone or task due date — with its own colour.
  • Finish-to-Start dependencies on a task: you pick the blocking tasks from among those of the same project.
  • The link is read on the blocked task, as its "depends on" list, and clears itself when a task is deleted.
  • A hierarchy separate from dependencies: parent task and subtasks, for breaking deliverables down.
  • A due date on every task, set from its detail panel, which lands on the project timeline automatically.
  • Project indicators: tasks past their due date, and tasks falling due in the next 7 days.

What the timeline puts on one axis

The project timeline is not a second plan maintained by hand but a projection over data that already exists. It gathers, in order, four kinds of item: the start of each sprint, its end, the milestones you define and the task due dates. Each item carries its type label and colour, so you can tell at a glance what is a contractual checkpoint and what is internal delivery rhythm. Milestones are created and deleted from the same page, so maintaining the timeline does not mean going through another screen. What the timeline is not: a bar chart with a time scale and drawn durations — it is a vertical list, in date order.

Dependencies: what they do and what they do not

On each task you pick, from a list of the same project's tasks, the ones that block it. The relation is Finish-to-Start — the predecessor must be finished before the successor — and is read from the blocked task, as its "depends on" list; the blocking task does not yet show the list of what it holds up, even though the link is stored in both directions. A task cannot depend on itself, and when a task is deleted its links disappear in both directions, leaving no orphan references. What does not exist: the other three link types (Start-to-Start, Finish-to-Finish, Start-to-Finish), positive or negative lag between them, and automatic recalculation of downstream dates.

Milestones and due dates — how you track them

A milestone is an entity of the project in its own right, with a name, a date and a description, created and deleted from the timeline page; it marks the checkpoint on the axis without gathering tasks underneath it. Due dates sit on the task, are set from its detail panel, and are plain calendar dates, not durations chained to one another. Two project-level indicators rest on them: how many tasks are past their due date and how many fall due in the next seven days, computed from the project data rather than estimated. The same due dates feed the overdue counter on each board column, so the time reference is identical whichever screen you look at it from.

Why there is no critical path here

A critical path requires a duration on each task and a network calculation that sums them along chains. 4myprojects holds due dates and precedence relations, not chained durations, so it computes neither free nor total float, highlights no critical chain, and saves no baseline to measure variance against. The practical consequence: moving a due date stays your decision, taken by looking at the tasks that depend on the one you moved, rather than a cascading reschedule proposed by the platform. There is also no import of plans from other tools and no export of the timeline — the structure is built directly here.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when I move the due date of a task others depend on?

Nothing automatically. The other tasks' due dates stay as they are, and the dependency remains a precedence note on the blocked task. Rescheduling downstream is yours to do, by opening the tasks that list this one under "depends on" and moving their due dates.

Which dependency types can I use?

Finish-to-Start only: the predecessor must be finished before the successor. Start-to-Start, Finish-to-Finish and Start-to-Finish do not exist, and neither does lag or lead between linked tasks.

Can I link tasks across different projects?

No. A blocking task must be in the same project as the task it blocks — a link proposed across projects is ignored on save.

How do I add a milestone?

From the timeline page, with a name, a date and an optional description. It appears on the axis immediately, in the position its date gives it, and can be deleted from there. An existing milestone cannot be edited in place, though — you delete it and add it again.

Are public holidays and leave taken into account?

No. Due dates are calendar dates, not durations in working days: there is no working calendar per project or per person, no part-time schedule and no leave record that would remove a day from the calculation.

Can I import an existing plan from MS Project or a CSV?

No. There is no file import and no field mapping. Projects, milestones, tasks and dependencies are created directly in the platform — for an existing plan you recreate the structure once.

Add the milestones, put due dates on the tasks and link them through "depends on" — the timeline lays them all on one axis, together with the sprints.
